What Is Two-Step RSBM

Two Steps — Preform First, Blow Second

Reheat Stretch Blow Moulding (RSBM) is a two-step process: PET preforms are manufactured separately, then reheated and stretch-blown into finished bottles. This separation of injection from blow moulding is what makes RSBM the dominant technology for high-volume PET bottle production worldwide. The EP-HGA automatic series drives the preform through multi-zone infrared heating and into the blow station without any hand contact, producing bottles at up to approximately 12,000 per hour from a single machine.

Compared to one-step ISBM, RSBM separates preform production from blow moulding, enabling preform inventory management, higher cavity counts at equivalent machine size, and the widest possible container volume range — from 200 ml cosmetic flacons to 20-litre water barrels — across a single product family. For applications requiring biaxial orientation in a single continuous process without preform storage, see our one-step ISBM machine range.

The EP-HGA series covers every major PET bottle application across six industries: cosmetic and daily chemical, food and wide-mouth jars, water and beverage, pharmaceutical, edible oil and handle bottles, and chemical and pesticide. The FS series adds wide-mouth jar capability for protein powder jars, baby bottles and PP bottles that standard ES series neck dimensions cannot accommodate.

Fully Automatic & Semi-Automatic — Two RSBM Production Platforms

The EP-HGA fully automatic series is for high-volume dedicated production lines where preform loading, heating and blowing are fully automated without operator intervention. The EP-HGS semi-automatic series is for small-batch, multi-SKU, and start-up operations where investment flexibility and fast changeover matter more than maximum throughput.

Semi-automatic RSBM for small-batch, multi-SKU, start-up, and sample production. Lower capital cost, 220V single-phase power, fast mould changeover. From 1-litre cosmetic bottles to 20-litre water barrels. Each HGS machine requires a separate EP-HGJ series preform heater.

Technology Comparison

One-Step ISBM vs Two-Step RSBM — Which Process Is Right for You?

Both processes produce PET bottles. The difference is whether injection moulding and blow moulding happen in one integrated machine or two separate steps. The right choice depends on your container geometry, annual volume, product quality requirements, and capital budget.

Faktor One-Step ISBM

Process Steps Injection + stretch + blow in one machine. Preform not stored. Preform injection separate. Preform reheated then blown. Two distinct steps.
Preform Storage No preform storage — preform goes direct to blow station Preforms stored and sourced independently — decoupled scheduling
Behållarvolym Typically up to 2 litres; specialist machines up to 5 L 200 ml to 20 litres — widest range in the industry
Container Neck Narrow and wide-mouth. Very wide-mouth (baby bottle, PP jar) — ISBM advantage Standard narrow-neck (ES series) and wide-mouth (FS series) up to 220 mm mold-close
Cavity Count 1 to 12 cavities; limited by injection moulding clamping force 1 to 8 cavities (ES series); up to 2 cavities wide-mouth (FS series)
Output (bph) 1,500 – 10,000+ bph depending on cavity count 2,000 – ~12,000 bph (auto); 150–1,100 bph (semi-auto)
Material Orientation Biaxial molecular orientation from a warm preform — consistent material properties Biaxial orientation from reheated preform — excellent for high-volume standard bottles
Special-Shaped Bottles Strong advantage — complex shapes, undercut features, asymmetric geometry Standard round and oval geometries. Custom shapes possible but more limited.
Preform Sourcing Own preform injection — full control, no external supplier dependency Purchase preforms from specialist suppliers — or inject in-house separately
Capital Cost Higher per unit — integrated injection + blow system Lower entry point — especially semi-auto HGS series from 220V single-phase
Floor Space Compact — one machine, one footprint Two stations (heater + blow machine) for semi-auto; integrated for full-auto
Resin Compatibility PET, PP, PC — PP and PC are ISBM advantages not achievable on standard RSBM PET, PETG — broadest PET container range
Ideal Application Baby bottles (PP), wide-mouth PP jars, complex-shaped bottles, pharmaceutical packaging requiring one-step hygiene High-volume PET water, beverage, cosmetic, chemical, food — where output and volume range matter most

Quick Selection Guide

Choose ISBM (EP-HGY) when: producing PP or PC bottles, complex/special-shaped containers, baby bottles, wide-mouth PP jars, or where one-step hygiene is required.

Choose RSBM (EP-HGA / EP-HGS) when: producing standard PET bottles at high volume, the widest container volume range (200 ml – 20 L), lowest per-bottle cost at scale, or starting with semi-automatic investment.

Working Principle

Two-Step RSBM — From Preform to Finished Bottle

The two-step RSBM process separates preform manufacture from blow moulding, enabling high cavity counts, flexible preform sourcing, and the widest container volume range in the blow moulding industry.

Step 01

Preform Manufacture

PET preforms are injection-moulded separately — either in-house or from a preform supplier. The preform encodes the bottle's neck finish, thread geometry, and material weight. Preform inventory enables decoupled production scheduling and flexible volume management.

Step 02

Preform Feeding & Sorting

Preforms are automatically sorted, oriented and fed into the EP-HGA machine's heating zone via automated preform sorter and feeder — standard for all ES 6-cavity and 8-cavity configurations. Fully automatic — no manual preform handling once the hopper is loaded.

Step 03

Multi-Zone Infrared Heating

Preforms pass through the digital PLC-controlled multi-zone infrared heating array. Zone-by-zone temperature calibration achieves the correct temperature gradient from neck to base — the prerequisite for uniform wall thickness distribution in the blow station.

Step 04

Stretch Blow Moulding & Discharge

The servo-driven stretch rod extends the preform axially while blow air at 35 kg/cm² (3.43 MPa) expands it radially in the mould cavity. Biaxial molecular orientation improves compression resistance, gas barrier and optical clarity. Finished bottles discharge automatically.
